Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care

Completion: August 04, 2014

Location: Penetanguishene

Total Construction Value: $218,000,000

Size: 350,000 sq. ft.

Waypoint Center for Mental Health Care is a 301-bed psychiatric hospital located in Penatanguishene on Georgian Bay. It replaces the 160-bed Oak Ridge building and the 20-bed Brebeuf building and is the first step in consolidating services in a more efficient, integrated complex. The new facility provides an extensive range of both acute and longer-term psychiatric inpatient and outpatient services to Simcoe County, Dufferin County, and Muskoka/Parry Sound. In addition, Waypoint provides the province's only maximum security forensic hospital for clients served by both the mental health and justice systems. The project delivery model was Design-Build-Finance-Maintain, an innovative approach in which contractors, engineers, design professionals, financiers, and other professionals all team to deliver a lifecycle bid.

Mechanical Systems

This Infrastructure Ontario project gave us an opportunity to collaborate directly with Hidi Rae Consulting Engineers. We assisted in the design process and contributed our mechanical construction expertise to facilitate a cost-effective design and implementation. Design highlights included consideration of seismic requirements as well as the need for the facility to be operational on a 24/7,  365-days-a-year basis. Our in-house fabrication and manufacturing capabilities were a key part of meeting requirements for exceptional quality.

Project Highlights

1) The project is pursuing LEED Gold certification, it is currently under review by the CaGBC.
