Kelson was the mechanical contractor for McMaster University Student Activity and Fitness expansion and renovation project. This project involved the addition of a 3-storey Fitness Addition, a 4-storey Student Activity Building, major renovations to the existing David Braley Athletic Centre Centre, plus a new east gym and high-performance space. The new Student Activity Building includes an atrium event/social space with bleacher seating, open mezzanine with Atrium balcony, student lounge and napping spaces, a grocer market store, multi-faith prayer rooms, community kitchen, food collective spaces, peer counselling spaces, a multi-purpose room with capacity for 500 people, and faculty/staff offices. This project is targeting LEED Silver certification, and was an occupied facility. The mechanical highlights of the project include the installation of five new air handling units, along with steam pressure reducing valves and steam heat exchangers serving both mechanical rooms. The scope also involves the addition of heating pumps, domestic water pumps, and storm and sanitary pumps, as well as tie-ins to the existing heating, chilled water, and steam systems. Heating and cooling is supported through force flow heaters, fan coils, radiant panels, wall fin, and radiation heating. In addition, the project includes the replacement of the chilled water coils in the existing air handling units.
