McMaster University - Student Activity and Fitness Expansion (SAFE)

Construction began in the summer of 2018 for this multi-faceted project located at the west side of the David Braley Athletic Centre (DBAC) and at the east side of the Ivor Wynne Centre (IWC). This project will see the addition of a 3-storey Fitness Addition, a 4-storey Student Activity Building, major renovations to the existing DBAC PULSE Centre, plus a new east gym and high performance space addition to IWC.
The new Fitness Addition and Renovation will provide a new entry and reception space, assessment offices, lounge space, climbing and bouldering wall, heavy weights, circuit and resistance, cardio spaces and a variety of additional studios with all amenities.
The new Student Activity Building will include an atrium event/social space with bleacher seating, open mezzanine with Atrium balcony, student lounge and napping spaces, a grocer market store, multi-faith prayer rooms, community kitchen, food collective spaces, peer counselling spaces, a multi-purpose room with capacity for 500 people, and faculty/staff offices. This is a LEED Silver project

Kelson mechanical highlights: Five new air handling units, Steam PRV’s and steam heat exchangers for both mechanical rooms, Heating pumps, domestic water pumps, storm and sanitary pumps, Tie-ins to existing heating, chilled and steam systems, Force flow heaters, fan coils, radiant panels, wall fin and radiation heating, and Existing air handling chilled water coil replacement.
