Georgina Multi-Use Recreational Facility & Library

Completion: April 30, 2024

Location: Georgina

Size: 81,000 sq. ft.

Kelson is the mechanical contractor for the new Georgina Multi-Use Recreational Complex (MURC). This is a 3 building, new construction in the Town of Georgina. The new facility includes: a double gymnasium with walking track/multipurpose room, six-lane 25 meter pool, therapy pool, indoor walking track, multi-use meeting/activity rooms, active living space and a Discovery Library Branch. The Discovery Library will offer one-stop services, expanded programs and new technology options. The goal is to create an inclusive environment that offers multi-purpose and multi-generational spaces to serve as a community living room and hub. The central welcome space has natural light and a two-storey high fireplace. The MURC is accessible to all, meeting all building codes and Facility Accessibility Standards. All 3 pools feature accessible ramps and the second floor of the building can be reached using a fully accessible elevator. This project is targeted for LEED Gold certification.

Mechanical Systems

Kelson was responsible for the entire mechanical scope of this project. There are two main mechanical rooms. The project uses air-side heat recovery to preheat ventilation air from exhaust air (heating and cooling), hence consuming less energy. Optimize Energy Performance, was given and comprises a high R-value building envelop; building features like indoor air quality, building energy performance, and energy-efficient systems help to achieve this. Some of the green design components include improved water efficiency, optimized energy performance of heating and cooling systems, the use of sustainable materials, improved indoor air quality, maximized use of daylight and drought-resistant plants.
